G.I. Joe: Resolute first aired in 7-minute installments on Cartoon Network’s [adult swim] in the summer of 2009. For adult fans of the 1980s cartoon series this is as close to perfection as an animated Joe feature can get. The animation style has a much more sleek and anime feel to it, but these are still the same characters and it’s set in the same “universe” as the 1980s cartoon. “Resolute” has all the classic characters (Baroness, Destro, Cobra Commander, Duke, Snake Eyes, Stormshadow, Scarlett, etc.) from the ’80s cartoon, but it treats them with a PG-13 rather than a “Saturday Morning” sensibility. There are bullets and blood and death.

The plot centers on another attempt by Cobra Commander to overtake the world and the Joes rallying to stop him. The highpoint of the film for me included the ultimate battle between Snake Eyes and Stormshadow I always dreamed of as a kid. If the 2009 feature film had half of the energy and emotion as this one fight alone it would’ve been an infintely more enjoyable film. Bottomline is if you were a 1980s Joe fan and found the live-action film lacking then you will be pleasantly shocked and awed by this outstanding animated feature.

as a long time fan of both anime and manga and also growing up watching GI JOE in the 1980s this was the answer me and my fiancee wanted a more mature story!

Blake Edwards’s delightful Victor/Victoria may be one of the last of the great, old-style movie musical comedies–it is so good, it was turned into a hit Broadway stage musical years later. And both versions starred Edwards’s wife Julie Andrews (the former Mary Poppins) in the title role–as Victor and Victoria. She’s a down-and-out singer who hooks up with a flamboyantly gay theatrical veteran (Robert Preston), and together they become the toast of 1934 Paris by dreaming up a provocative nightclub act in which Victoria assumes the identity of a man in drag. So, in other words, Andrews plays a woman playing a man playing a woman … and that’s only the beginning of the sexual identity confusions that provide the ful for this splendidly classy slapstick musical farce. The young, rather unsoldierly Americans are offered the opportunity to “capture” the Germans without a fight–until a fatal misunderstanding plunges their efforts into tragedy. Director Keith Gordon, who also penned the screenplay, creates an unusually eloqunt, offbeat platoon drama shot amidst the tranquil beauty of a snow-covered forest. His excellent cast includes future stars Ethan Hawke and Gary Sinise, with Frank Whaley, Kevin Dillon, Arye Gross, and Peter Berg rounding out the platoon. Comedian Chris Rock is the leader of a middle-class rap act that wins fame and fortune after donning a prison persona. The title stands for Cell Block 4. Naturally, they are mistaken for the real thing by everyone but the incarcerated gangstas, who are none too happy at the theft of their identities. One of the better efforts from Saturday Night Live alumni, this “rapumentary” is a hip-hop hit. However, it is not up to the cutting humor of that granddaddy of all spoofs, This Is Spinal Tap?, as misogyny and meanness get in the way. It has an anything-goes mentality, so expect outrageously filthy lyrics and plenty of tasteless humor. Of note: Director Tamra Davis was also behind that wild 1992 road movie, Guncrazy. –Rochelle O’Gorman

Life
Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy play it surprisingly straight in this film by director Ted Demme. Though there are laughs to be had, this is a story about perseverance in the face of a life of disappointment (yet the film was sold as a prison comedy). But Stir Crazy this isn’t. Rather, Lawrence and Murphy play a couple of New Yorkers making a moonshine run from New York to Mississippi during the Prohibition who find themselves framed for murder and sentenced for life to a prison chain gang. As they age, the two become close friends, although the strait-laced Lawrence always resents the free-wheeling Murphy for getting him into the situation in the first place. Ultimately, these two men learn to find meaning where they can, taking valu from friendship and their limited ability to affect the lives of others. At times preachy, it ends on an upbeat note; the film’s biggest laughs are reserved for the final section, in which Lawrence and Murphy don age makeup and play octogenarians. –Marshall Fine
